History
Dr. Yasar Bilgin, chairman of the Turkish-German Health Foundation, initiated, together with a party of physicians, scholars and scientists, among them the now late Prof. Dr. Knorpp, the former Medical Director of the Giessen University Hospital, the Avicenna Award and founded for this purpose the Association, - a new pathway for the integration of immigrants in Germany and Europe. The Award honours achievements for conflict free coexistence and mutual tolerance based on the important cause of a rapprochement between the diverse cultures.
The Turkish-German Health Foundation was founded in 1988, with Dr. Yasar Bilgin as it’s the first president. The main objective of the foundation is to research into the specific health problems associated with Turkish persons residing in Germany and the implementation of preventive and therapeutic medical interventions. The institution closely collaborates with national and international organisations in the health and social sectors. Apart from the pursuit in promoting health education and health care, the TDG also conducts several integration ventures together with diverse collaborative partners. These are for example various foundations, the Hessian Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs, the Federal Office of Migration and Refugees as well as the European Social Fund.
„The Avicenna Award should make us aware that the mental and cultural state of the human civilisation is a combined product from all cultures and religions. This awareness can create the possibility for us to live in peace and harmony in the future. Laying claim to a monopoly for scientific and mental furtherance, does not only generate an imbalance in the world, but means first and foremost a misjudgement of history.“
(Dr. Yasar Bilgin)
