The association and its aims
The Avicenna Award Registered Association was founded on the 20th September 2005 in Frankfurt am Main. Under the patronage of the Hessian Prime Minister, the award is to be bestowed at regular intervals to deserving persons or institutions that have proven an outstanding achievement in intercultural understanding. The Avicenna Award Association consists of an Executive Committee, a Jury and an Advisory Board, as well as presently, 34 members stemming from the culture, medicine, theological, philosophical, oriental, political, and commercial and integration spheres. Numerous international experts and well known personalities are to be found among the various panels, amongst them the former President of the German Federal Parliament, Prof. Dr. Rita Süssmuth, the former Turkish Prime Minister Yildirim Akbulut, Prof. Frank Wilczek (USA) the Nobel Laureate in Physics 2004, Dr. Georges Antoine Corm the former Lebanese Finance Minister as well as Prof. Herbert Landau, Judge from the Federal Constitutional Court.
The incentive behind the award is the aspiration for peace and tolerance between the diverse cultures, not just within Europe but spilling out over its borders. The Life and Works of Avicenna appear to be particularly appropriate for this venture, associating a person who is recognised both in the Orient as in the Occident and whose significant medical and philosophical Works have founded a bridging of cultures over many hundreds of years. Consequently, the Avicenna Award is a distinction for outstanding achievements, which have succeeded through mutual intercultural exchange, to dismantle stereotypes, and thus promoting a rapprochement between the cultures.
